June 21st 2016 (Summer Solistice) is being celebrated as International Yoga Day. The declaration came after the call for the adoption of June 21st as International Day of Yoga by Hon’ble Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi during his address to UN General Assembly on September 27, 2014.
What does that have to do with “Periyava Puranam” per se?
Well, it persuades us to do two things…
- Let’s read a tiny snippet about Yoga from Deivathin Kural
- Come, let’s try some PeriyavAasanaa!!!
What is this PeriyavAasanaa?
Everyday we come across so many photos of Periyava via social media. It is quite a blessing to see various photographs of HIM that spans over HIS 100 years.
When we see HIM in HIS photos,
sometimes we see HIS Paadham (foot)
sometimes we see HIS eyes
sometimes we look for HIS “Abhaya Hastam”
sometimes we notice the vilvam maalai or the lemon maalai that adorns HIM
sometimes we gaze at the people in the background
How many times have we noticed HIS posture when HE sits or stands? HE presents an unique posture most of the times when HE is sitting or standing… It looks so complicated when we notice closely… Now, that’s what we call as PeriyavAasanaa.
Today being International Yoga Day, let’s try to imitate HIS Postures and see if we can even come close to any of HIS unique postures! Here are some of HIS pictures to try!
- This is possible…
- This seems possible too…
- This seems doable…
- This seems doable…
- May or May not be possible…
- May or May not be possible…
- May or May not be possible…
- Difficult for many..
- Impossible!
- Look at HIS foot facing down – Impossible!
These are just very few… As we all know, there are many more of HIS unique postures! Share it with us in the comment section.
Happy International Yoga Day !
What a beautiful post. Brings upon a natural smile, viewing Periyava’s different postures. We all know even during the ripe years of His body, Periyava would never compromise on sitting in the kukkutasana for performing achamanam, while most of us do it (wrongly) sitting in the sukhasana!
Maha amirtham hara hara Sankara maha periava sastanga nameskaram
Yogiiswara Maha Periyava! Hara Hara Shankara, Jaya Jaya shankara! May His Blessings for Good Health be ever on us!
Thanks much for an amazing post and opening up the whole new space of PeriyavAasanA! PeriyavA with His boundless anugraham always made adiyen to relish various postures of Himself many times before. Adiyen has always loved staring at and enjoy different postures of Sri Sri Sri PeriyavA. However, Sarveshwaran didn’t give me any clue about the AasanA inside each of His posture rather came up with the idea of different AasanAs in His postures through this post so every BhakthA and the whole world can try to see if they can do the simplest AasanAs in real life.
(Without any single doubt, Sarveshwaran has proved to the world that PeriyavA is the Yogamoorthi).
Jaya Jaya Shankara |
Hara Hara Shankara ||
Thanks for the rare photos. Hara hara shankara .Jaya Jaya shankara.
Sri Periyava and Sri Sivan saar mostly use the same aasanaas. It is not like in yoga people do for some time. they do it for hours casually while talking to some one, standing posture even when they stretch. of course we can try but can not do it as it needs their Anugraham. There are many aasanaas in our nithya karmanushtanam(Thrikala Sandyavandanam) if we do it properely including aachamanm we will come to know and understand the importance of yoga during Maharishis days. Those who have closely observed Sri Periyava doing aachamanm would know about it. Thanks sharing the informations. My Pranams to Periyava puranam.org team.
