Sri Kamakshi Amman Kovil

Periyava had gone to have darshan at Sri Kamakshi Ambal Temple. Sri Kannan Mama and Sri Vaitha Mama accompanied Him. In the early days, Sri Kamakshi Temple had been a centre for ‘asavya’ marg, lead by Na.Subramanyam (Guhanandha Mandali). It was stopped by Periyava in 1920. Even then, till 1950s, it was called ‘pappaan koil’ (‘பாப்பான் கோயில்னு சொல்லுவா’) and seldom public at large used to come.

In fact, after 6pm on any day, no one will be there. ‘Sthanikas’ were struggling to survive. It was during such times, Periyava went there…

“அது என்னடா?” (“What is it?”), Periyava said pointing to a ‘swarna’ like mala on Ambal.

“த்ரிசதி…” (“Trisathi…”)

“த்ரிசதி தங்கத்துல யாரு பண்ணியிருக்கா?” (“Who has done Trisathi in gold?”

“தங்கத்துல இல்லை… வெள்ளில பண்ணி முலாம் போட்டிருக்கு.” (“Not in gold… Made in Silver and coated with gold.”)

“அம்பாளுக்கு முலாம் போட்டது என்னாடா? தங்கத்துலேயே பண்ணு… அதை எடுத்துடு!” (Gold coating? For Ambal? Remove it. Make it gold itself”)

It was removed. Looking at both Sri Kannan Mama and Sri Vaitha Mama, Periyava said, “ஏய்! நீங்க ரெண்டு பெரும் சஹஸ்ரநாம மாலை தங்கத்துல அம்பாளுக்கு பண்றேளா?” (“Yei! Will you both do a Sahasranama Mala out of gold?”)

Highly experienced sevakas, they are. So they replied, “பெரியவா அனுக்ரஹம் இருந்தா பண்ணறோம்!” (“With Periyava’s anugraham we shall.”).  Periyava blessed them. There came a lady, a relative of Sri CP Ramaswamy’s family. She instantly took her bangles off and offered to Periyava.

“வாங்கிக்கோடா…” (“Receive them…”) said Periyava.

It was taken by Sri Mama. It was about 8 sovereign.. then everything was collected. Each “Archanai” was half-sovereign. The golden chain alone weighed 200 sovereign as it has to hold all the aksharams”, recollects Sri Kannan Mama.  And Mama continues, “It was offered and Periyava would have prayed within HIS mind, ‘அம்மா! (‘Amma! You may shine better!”)…

That’s it! Then…

Then ‘Velli Ratham’. Pudu Periyava did ‘Thanga Ratham’. Then ‘Thanga Vimanam’. What is left out?”, says Sri Kannan Mama.

தேடனும் அந்த கிழவரை” (“In those. Day, we’ve to (really,) search for that aged person (Gurukkal)…”. It used to be so hard to find the ‘Archaka’. “பெரியவா என்னை, இந்த…சில்பி, அனந்த விகடன் ஸ்ரீதரன் (பரணிதரன்), எல்லோரையும் அனுபிச்சி பாத்து படம் எழுதி விகடன்ல போடச் சொன்னா…” (“Periyava sent me, Silpi, anantha vikatan sridharan (baranidharan) to Mangadu Temple and asked to draw the Ambal and publish in Vikatan…”) says Sri Kannan Mama.

(“Ambal is Aadhi Kamakshi and … Ambaal is doing thapas in Panchaagni… Sri Chakram is there… Meru is there…”)

(“Periyava has gone to Mangadu 2-3 times… See now, it’ll take 2 hours to have darshan…”

thiruverkadu+karumariamman

“அப்போ… நூம்பல் ல இருந்தோம். ‘இங்க பக்கத்துலதான் திருவேற்காடுன்னு ஒரு பாடல்பெற்ற ஸ்தலம் இருக்கு. அங்க போகணும்னு சொன்னா… பெரியவா!”  (“At that time, we were at Noombal. Periyava was saying, ‘There is a Sthalam Thiruvrkadu sung by Mahans’…”), recollects Sri Kannan Mama. So the camp was moved to Thiruverkadu.

Sri Ramadoss was there. He was sitting near the large ‘புத்து’ (‘puththu’) just outside the Temple, “அவர்… ‘குறி’ சொல்லிண்டு இருந்தார்.”, recollects Sri Mama.  “இது நன்னா வளரனும்”, Sri Ramadoss prayed to Periyava. Periyava was holding a piece of garland. “அமோகமா இருக்கும்பா! அமோகமா இருக்கும்!” (“Will flourish! Will fourish!”), blessed Periyava and thrown the garland over the ‘puththu’. Now, Thiruverkadu has become a place of spiritual landmark.

Public at large prayed to Periyava about the ‘நல்ல பாம்பு’, a very long one. (“All of you pray to her, ‘Hey Matha! Public are in ‘agnanam’. So please be out of sight…”)
One day, the long snake came out and went under a ‘Peepal Tree’ and was never seen again. No one would ever know where all.. what all Periyava has blessed.

“இன்னைக்கும் அந்த ராமதாசெல்லாம் பெரியாவகிட்ட சொல்லாம எதுவுமே செய்யமாட்டா! மடத்து மேல அந்த மரியாதை வச்சிருக்கா!” . (“Even today, (Sri) Ramadoss and others will never do anything without informing Periyava. They have such respect on the Matham”), says, Sri Kannan Mama.

Similarly, Sri Kalikaambal Temple in Broadway, Chennai. “பெரியவா ரெண்டுதரம் வந்தா… அதுலேந்துதான் இதுக்கு பெருமை” (“Periyava had come two times to the temple. Since then it was popular…”), says Sri Ramamurthy of that temple.

“இது மாதிரி இன்னும் எத்தனையோ… அவா பிரகாசிக்கனும்னு நினைச்சிட்டா போதும்! …உள்ள இருக்கிற ஸ்வரூபம் தானே!” . (“Like this, its enough if Periyava thinks that the Deity has to SHINE! It is the same ‘swarup’ inside!”), says Sri Kannan Mama.

Surutapalli

Palli Kondeswarar Temple, Surutapalli

Palli Kondeswarar Temple, Surutapalli

Once, Periyava asked Sri Ganapathy Sthapathi about a “Sthalam” where Lord Shiva is in Syanam… Sri Sthapathi said that he hasn’t heard about any such sthalam and generally only Lord Vishnu is seen in “Anantha Syanam”. Periyava asked Sthapathi to visit Palli Kondeswarar Temple, Surutapalli. Palli Kondeswarar translates to reclining deity. Shiva as Palli Kondeswarar is seen in reclining posture in the lap of his consort Parvati as Sarva Mangalambika. Periyava then visited that temple on the way during His yatra. At that time, the temple was in such a dilapidated condition. Today, on a Pradosham day, it is not only difficult to get darshan of Palli Kondeswarar… It is even difficult to step into Surutapalli as it is so much crowded…

Nanganallur then and now

Nanganallur Then and Now…

Nanganallur, Chennai

While Periyava was returning back to Kanchipuram from His yatra, He asked His attendants to inquire if there is any village nearby… His attendants inquired and then said there is no such village… Periyava inquired a very old man on the way. That old man pointed to the east and said there is a village… It was such a remote place with no signs of dwelling… Today, each nook and corner of that village that was blessed to have Periyava’s feet walking through, has a temple… Today that village is one of the prime areas in Chennai… And, it is called Nanganallur!

Today’s Nectar :

Periyava Kamakshi

Sri Sivan Sar in his book ‘ஏணிப்படிகளில் மாந்தர்கள்’ (‘Yenipadigalil Maandhargal’), details the history of Sri Sadasivabrahmendral. Sri Brahmendral blessed the idol in the bush, which was taken by the King Sri Thondaiman, to SHINE and thus the ‘VARAPRASADHI’ became available to public at large. She was Punnainallur Mariyamman. Sri Mariyamman was consecrated at Punnainallur by King Thondaiman after his darshan of Sri Brahmendral.

Only ParaBrahmam can bless the Deity to shine in an idol because it is only from that Parabrahmam came many such ‘roopam’. Sri Sar has said that as far as he knows only very few has attained such highest level (in the recent history i.e., ‘kali yuga’).

Who else is going to pour such blessings for us?
Who is going to explain these to us?
