Sri Narayanan Mama was one of the anukka thondar and his duty was to take care of ‘madi’ things. That day morning he got a big ‘thittu’ from Periyava. It was still lingering in his ears… “என்னடா, படவா! இங்க என்னடா பண்ணின்டிருகே?” (“Ennadaa, Badawa! Inga ennadaa pannindirukae?”) and so on….

“வெளியிலே போயிட்டு வந்து மடி வஸ்திரத்து மேலே பட்டுடானோ என்னமோ தெரியலே…” (“Veliyilae poyittu vandhu madi vastraththu Maele pattutaano ennamo theriyale…”) said Sri Kannan Mama. At that time, Periyava’s face had become red and Sri Narayanan Mama got shivers till his spine. Now, when Periyava called again, will Periyava repeat the ‘thittu’ again in front of everyone…?

Sri Narayanan Mama came in front of Periyava. On Shankaranthi day, there are series of rituals and practices that take place in the mutt. One of them is ‘தானம்’ (dhaanam) like vastram, swarnam which are given to vaidikaas. Almost everyone in the mutt and devotees were there. Manager of the mutt was taking care of giving the ‘தானம்’ and was keeping Periyava informed.

Manager announced: “Swarna dhaanam… Appakutti Sastrigal…”

Periyava: கொஞ்சம் இரு. நாராயணன்-ன கூப்பிடு … (“Konjam iru. Narayanana koopidu!”)

Sri Narayanan Mama came in front and did namaskaram to Periyava and stood up.

Periyava: இந்தா எடுத்துக்கோ ! (“Indha eduththukko!”). Sri Mama couldn’t believe it. Periyava was asking him to take the ‘swarnam’. Pleasant surprise! Sri Mama took it and placed a prayer to Periyava…

Sri Narayanan: “பெரியவா என்னை தினமுமே கோவிசுக்கணும்!” (Periyava, ennai dhinamumae kovichchikanum!”)

Everybody there, burst out of laugh. Is it Sri Mama’s sense of humour or better understanding of Periyava, we don’t know!

சிரிக்காத பெரியவா கூட சிரிசுட்டா ! (“Sirik-kaadha Periyava kooda sirichchittaa!”) exclaims Sri Kannan Mama.

Sri Kannan Mama continues, பெரியவா வாய் விட்டு சிரிக்கவே மாட்டா. ஞானிகள் சிரிக்க மாட்டாணு இருக்கு. பெரியவா ஒரு மாதிரி வெக்க படற மாதிரி சிரிப்பா… ரொம்ப அழகா இருக்கும். (“Periyava vaaivittu sirikkavae maattaa. Gnanigal sirikka mattaannu irukku. Periyava oru maathiri, vekka padara maathiri sirippaa. Romba azhagaa irukkum!”)…

பெரியவா யாரையாவது கோவிசுண்டானா, அவாளுக்கு ரொம்ப நாளா நடக்காத காரியம் நடக்கும்! , says Sri Thiagu Thaatha. (Periyava yaarai-yaavadhu kovichundaanaa, avaalukku romba naaala nadakkaadha kariyam nadakkum!”)

பெரியவா கோவிசுண்டானா அவனுக்கு அத்ரிஷ்டம் தூக்கி அடிச்சுடும்.. (Periyava kovichchundanna, avanukku (adhirshtam) thooki adichchudum!), says Sri Kannan Mama.

பரப்ரமத்தின் தண்டனையை ஏற்கும் பாக்யத்தை அளவா அவன் பெற்று விட்டான் (“Parabrahmaththin Dhandanaiyai yerkkum BHAGYAthTHAI allavaa avan pertru vittaan!), says Sri Sivan Saar about a watchman who was trying to beat Sri Sadhaa Siva Bramendhral, by mistaking him for a burglar.
